Quest Mode - Daily Quests

Goal
Create a unique system that encouraged users to log into Quest Mode daily.
My Role
I principally led and designed the Daily Quest user flow and systems, as well as collaborated with the Content Design Team to come up with fun bite-sized narratives for players.
The Solution
Our solution was Daily Quests: A 'One-Click Adventure' that provided the player with an encounter and two ways to solve it. Each Daily Quest contained both success and failure scenarios for each of the two solutions, with a random role determining success or failure. Success provided slightly more Quest Points; a soft currency used to play Clash of Fans and activate other features of Quest Mode. After Daily Quests were deployed for four months, we saw a 45% increased retention rate as well as a 75% increase in paying/contributing to Daily Active Users.

How We Got There
Our inspiration for Daily Quests was rooted in mobile login rewards, giving the player a small bonus just for turning the app on. Additionally, we looked at the strengths of some of our other products, like our multiplayer text-based narrative-driven chat adventures in GatherBot, and found a way to combine the two.
By combining the proven structure of daily mobile rewards with the lighthearted and effective narrative of GatherBot Adventures, we were on the brink of something that resonated with our current user base. All that was left was to tune the systems so the rewards felt fair and to create a narrative that made sense for the fantasy theme.
The narrative was a particular challenge, as the scenario and results could only be a few sentences long, but it still needed to read as if the choice the player made had an impact on the situation the player was given. Great care was given to making sure that the experience of each Daily Adventure felt unique and fresh, which meant reviewing the copy multiple times, asking ourselves if what we wrote was clear enough, given the text constraints.
